Use uMap™ as a part of your onboarding process to reduce transition time and provide the certainty necessary for a successful launch into the organization!

Your new team member will:

  • Know the expectations of the role from day one.

  • Be aligned with their manager around responsibilities and KPIs.

  • Engaged in connection with other team members.

Step 1: Communicate

Once your new team member has accepted the offer, it's time to reach out and extend a warm welcome to them. Begin by sending a communication that expresses your excitement about them joining the team. In this message, include your uMap™ along with a brief description explaining it's purpose and usage. Additionally, extend an invitation for them to create their own uMap™ Profile.

Step 2: Meet

Arrange a meeting with your new team member prior to their first day. During this meeting, take the opportunity to introduce yourself by using your uMap™ and encourage them to share their uMap™ as well. Explain the purpose of uMap™ and highlight the benefits it brings to them. Additionally, share valuable insights about their fellow teammates and the significant roles they play within the organization.

Step 3: Connect

When sharing your uMap™, it's important to be open and transparent. Take the opportunity to share personal stories and discuss challenges you've experienced. These anecdotes serve as excellent ways to connect with your new team member and begin building trust right from the start.

By sharing personal stories, you create an environment of authenticity and vulnerability. This openness allows your new team member to relate to your experiences and understand that challenges are a normal part of professional growth. It also demonstrates your willingness to establish a genuine connection and encourages them to share their own stories and challenges.

Remember, building trust is a crucial foundation for effective teamwork and collaboration. Sharing personal experiences can help bridge the gap between team members and create a sense of camaraderie and support.

Step 4: Align

Take a moment to review the Top Responsibilities tile on the uMap™ together with your new team member. Collaborate to identify and define their top five responsibilities. During this process, discuss what Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) might look like initially and work together to input some SMART goals into this section.

By involving your team member in defining their responsibilities and setting goals, you empower them to take ownership of their work and align their efforts with the team's objectives. This collaborative approach also fosters a sense of clarity and accountability.

Step 5: Share

On your new team member's first day, gather your team together, either in person or virtually, and facilitate a uMap™ sharing session. As the leader, start by sharing a few things from your uMap™ in front of the group. Then, invite your new team member to share their uMap™ focusing on the right side. Encourage other team members to share their uMap™ as well.

This activity offers team members an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new team member joining their team. By sharing personal aspects such as strengths, favorites, and personal stories, team members gain insight into each other's unique qualities and experiences. This knowledge paves the way for meaningful conversations, encourages empathy, and cultivates a supportive environment within the team.

Step 6: Coach

Following their first day, it is important to schedule several times in the upcoming weeks/months to connect with your new team member and ensure alignment around goals and responsibilities. These check-ins serve as opportunities to assess their well-being, provide support, and address any challenges they may be facing.

By dedicating specific times for these check-ins, you demonstrate your commitment to their success and integration into the team. It allows you to provide guidance, offer resources, and address any concerns or questions they may have.
