Have you received an email letting you know your team member finished their self-reflection? It's your turn now to complete your manager's perspective.
Here's How It Works:
Step 1: Navigate to Direct Reports Page
Log into your account (app.myumap.com) and click on the Direct Reports tab under My Profile. Click the arrow next to the relevant conversation to add your perspective.
Step 2: Add your comments
On the landing page, you may see your team member’s comments. Here’s what to do in each scenario:
If you DON'T see their Self-Reflection:
This means your team member hasn’t submitted their Self-Reflection yet.
If significant time has passed since the conversation was initiated, consider sending them a reminder.
Use this time to jot down notes on their progress since your last conversation and save them for later.
Remember, it’s important to review your team member’s Self-Reflection before submitting your comments.
If you DO see their Self-Reflection:
Review their comments carefully.
Add your perspective in the comments box located to the right of their Self-Reflection.
At the top of the page, you’ll find a button to review your team member’s uMap™ as it appeared on the day the Self-Reflection was requested.
Important Note: Use the information icon next to questions for some helpful tips.
Helpful Tip #1:
If you would like your team member to complete their self-reflection more thoroughly before you provide your manager's perspective you can select the Revisit Self-Reflection button on the bottom of the page. This will send an email with your comments back to your team member requesting they fill out their self-reflection with additional information.
Step 3: Save comments/Send to Team Member
After you have added your perspective to each of the areas being reflected on, choose which action you'd like to perform. To keep your perspective private as you meet 1 on 1, select Save and finish later. To send to your team member, select Send to team member.
Important Note: Selecting 'Send to team member' (with or without your team member's self-reflection comments) will send your comments to your team member, no further edits can be made, and the conversation will be complete.
Step 4: Plan 1:1 Conversation
Now that you have reviewed your team member’s self-reflection, and have had the chance to provide your perspective, it’s time for you to take inventory.
What differences did you notice between their reflection and your perspective?
How should you prepare for a meaningful conversation addressing these differences?
You should look for ways to provide affirmation, but not shy away from the deeper discussions regarding development.
A time should be scheduled within the next week for a conversation with your team member. This is an opportunity to identify ways to motivate and support your team member’s success.
Helpful Tip #2:
While completing a self-reflection, both the manager and team member have the option to save and finish later.
Helpful Tip #3:
As you prepare for your conversation, here are a few things to consider:
Choose a location outside the office that is private, but inviting.
Be prepared. Look over your perspective beforehand so you are able to speak to the points you need to make.
Be present. Devote your full attention and try not to let phone calls or emails distract you during your one-on-one time.
Watch for emotional triggers, if needed, reset and find common ground.
Helpful Tip #4:
Don’t allow for too much time between when your team member completes their self-reflection and when you schedule to meet – your team member is anxiously awaiting your thoughts, insights, and encouragement.
