Supporting Development Plans

Managers play a key role in supporting the development plans of their team members. Here are several ways to support your team members:

1. Provide Clear Guidance: Help team members identify specific skills and areas for growth, aligning their development needs with both professional goals and organizational needs.

2. Set SMART Goals: Ensure development plans have Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) objectives, making progress easier to track and assess.

3. Offer Resources: Provide access to training, mentoring, or professional development opportunities that align with the team member's action plan.

4. Check-in Regularly: Schedule frequent one-on-one meetings to discuss progress, offer feedback, and adjust the plan as necessary.

5. Encourage Ownership: Empower employees to take responsibility for their own development while offering support and encouragement as needed.

6. Recognize and Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge achievements, no matter how small, to motivate employees and build confidence in their ability to grow.

By actively engaging in these ways, managers can help team members grow in meaningful ways that benefit both the individual and the organization.

What do I do now?

  1. Meet with team members to discuss alignment around professional goals and development needs.

  2. Direct team members to create an action plan in the Development Plan tab. Think about what success looks like and add a target date for completion.

  3. Follow the one-on-one conversation cadence and discuss progress, challenges or next steps with your team member.

  4. Encourage team members to update action items and track progress by updating the status. Be sure the action plan status gets marked completed when it is done.
